WORMS

Worms are fascinating creatures. See what they eat and where they live. Children learn up close how these critters dig into recycling! (Also offered at The Children's Garbage Museum in Stratford)

TRASH DETECTIVES

Everyone loves a good mystery. In this program, children become super sleuths, hot on the trash trail. Using their powers of deduction, each latter day Sherlock Holmes uncovers the truth of what is reusable, recyclable and just plain trash.  (Also offered at The Children's Garbage Museum in Stratford)

MAKE & TAKE A CRAFT

The museum supplies items that would normally be discarded and the children supply their imagination to turn trash into treasure. (Also offered at The Children's Garbage Museum in Stratford)

DISCOVERY

Children cooperatively sort recyclable plastic, metal, and paper from trash and pretend to be our big green sorting machine in this fun room! The activity takes place in the Discovery Room, which has a wall-mounted magnet for sorting steel and stimulating displays on each material!

INTERMEDIATE PROGRAMS

PLASTICS 101

Imagine life without plastics! Daily life would never be the same. There are hundreds of types of plastics. In this program, we discuss the origins of plastics, specific types of plastics, and some of their properties. Students hypothesize, observe, and draw conclusions from demonstrations using a variety of plastics. (Also offered at The Children's Garbage Museum in Stratford)

TRASH BINGO

You’ve never played Bingo like this before!  Here’s a chance to play a classic game with a trashy twist that mixes fun and learning. (Also offered at The Children's Garbage Museum in Stratford)

NATURAL RESOURCES

Where in the world do our resources come from? Each team plots locations of countries rich in identified natural resources. The benefits of conserving these resources are highlighted. See how natural resources start out as a global resource and then become a local resource once they are recycled!

ADVANCED PROGRAMS

N.I.M.B.Y.

What do you do when a landfill fills up?  Start another one?  Okay, but where?  "Not in my backyard!" is a usual response.  In this program students learn the difficult task of siting landfills and discuss land use issues.

RECYCLE MATCH GAME

We all recycle, right?  But do we all buy recycled products to help close the loop of recycling?  This challenging game displays examples of everyday items, from the practical to the whimsical.  Test your knowledge by matching the before and the after!

TRASH TREASURE HUNT

Try your skills as a "garbologist" and see what you can discover about a family from their garbage. Not everything that ends up in the garbage deserves to be there!  Hunt through a clean bag of one family’s trash and discover the hidden treasures of recyclable and reusable items.

MID-CONNECTICUT PROJECT WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANT

A rare opportunity to see how garbage is converted to RDF (refuse-derived fuel) and then burned to generate electricity. With special arrangements a guided tour of the plant is sometimes available.
