TYPES OF WASTE & RECYCLABLES MANAGED

What do I do with my trash?

Managing your household trash in Connecticut is pretty simple.

Set aside items that can be recycled:

  • Steel cans
  • Aluminum beverage containers
  • Plastic containers bearing the 1 or 2 symbol on the bottom
  • Newspapers

Tie the newspapers with string or place them in a paper grocery shopping bag. Rinse containers. Place everything in the recycling bin you receive from your town and follow your town’s instructions for recycling collections.

Everything else just goes in the garbage can, right? Wrong!

  • Electronics such as old computers, VCRs and cell phones contain substances that, if buried in landfills or burned in a waste-to-energy plant, can release toxins into the atmosphere. These items should be recycled. CRRA offers a series of household recycling collections each year, or see our resource links page for more information about electronics recycling.
  • Bulky items such as old furniture and rolls of carpeting may require special collections and handling; call your local public works department for more information.
Because types of items collected varies from town to town, make sure to check with your local public works department when you have questions.
