WHAT DOES YOUR TOWN RECYCLE?

Want to know what materials your town collects for recycling? If you have any questions, be sure to call your town's trash and recycling office or click on your town's name for a link to your public works Web site for more information.

To prepare items for dual-stream recycling:

  • Place newspapers in a brown paper shopping bag or tie them in a bundle with cotton or fiber twine.
  • If your town collects mixed paper -- such as junk mail, computer printer paper, magazines and catalogs -- simply place that material in the bag or bundle with your newspapers. Punch out clear plastic or glassine windows from envelopes. Shred any paper with personal information such as your name, account numbers, date of birth or other information to prevent identity theft.
  • To recycle boxboard (sometimes referred to as chipboard), such as shoe boxes, cereal boxes and pasta boxes, remove plastic or wax-paper liners from cereal boxes and remove plastic windows from pasta boxes. Flatten these items and include them in the same bag or bundle as your newspapers and mixed paper. Do not include wax- or plastic-coated cardboard.
  • Cut corrugated cardboard into small sections and bundle with cotton or fiber twine.
  • Rinse aseptic packages such as juice boxes and milk cartons and remove straws if any.
  • Rinse glass, aluminum, steel and plastic cans, jars, bottles and aluminum food trays. Labels don't need to be removed. Do not include containers of motor oil, antifreeze or other automotive fluids, paint cans or medicine bottles.
  • Do not include light bulbs, toys, pots and pans, window glass, dishes and other ceramic items, coat hangers, flower pots or plastic bags.
  • Don't forget to redeem deposit bottles and cans!

To prepare items for single-stream recycling:

  • Place newspapers, mixed paper, boxboard and corrugated cardboard and aseptic packages in the recycling bin or barrel with your other recyclables. Do not include newspapers contaminated with food waste, paper towels or food wrappers.
  • Rinse aseptic packages such as juice boxes and milk cartons and remove straws if any, then place in the recycling bin or barrel.
  • Rinse glass, aluminum, steel and plastic cans, jars, bottles and aluminum food trays, then place them in the recycling bin or barrel.
